Guruji and GuruAmma in front of Devipuram

Bīja Śrīṃ

First, let's talk about Śrīṃ. It consists of "Śa" "Ra" "Īṃ". “Ī” is a fourth letter, fourth sound, in A, Ā, I, Ī – fourth letter. It represents the transcendental state Turīya. It's also called Mahā Gupta Saraswatī bīja. It is a hidden reverse flow called Saraswatī, the seed of flows of knowledge.

"Īṁ" that's connected with "Śa". "Śa" is a symbol of auspiciousness and "Ra" is fire. An auspicious fire leading to an infinite expression of the flows of energies flowing in Cosmos. That's what the meaning of Śrīṃ is. The shorthand form of the entire thing.

Śrīṃ is our goal. That's why we call it Śrī Vidyā. Auspiciousness. Where everything is collapsed into a point. You can think of Śrīṃ as collapsing the entire Cosmos into a single point. It is Mahāsamhara. It eliminates all distinctions, all attributes. It even kills Viṣṇu, Brahmā, Śiva. It is that powerful. And that is the center of that Vidyā, the antarmukha sadhana.

So that's why Śrīṃ is so important for us. Only there all of us become one. It's our goal. It's our aspiration, that we reach that primordial state, which is unchangeable. Where there is no birth, there's no growth, there's no death. Punarāvṛttirahita purasthāyai namo namaḥ. We want to reach that state. That's why Śrīṃ is our goal, that we all want to... It is the deepest goal and a goal where we do not feel that we are annihilated. We are still alive but attributeless.

Bīja Hrīṁ

And Hrīṁ is the opposite of this one. What Śrīṃ does, Hrīṁ undoes. If Śrīṃ tries to collapse everything, Hrīṁ opens up everything, creates everything. It explodes the bindu, the point, into Space and Time. It creates an interval consisting of Space and Time, in which the waves, Saraswatis, the nādas, the flows of waves can take place.

For something to move from here to there, you need a "here" and a "there". Without a "here" and a "there" nothing can move. What will move from where to where? Movement requires Space, movement requires Time. So the first creation must involve the creation of Space and Time. And this creation of the pre-cosmic state of the Universe is called Hrīṃ.

It consists of three syllables. "Ha", "Ra", "Īṁ". "Ha" is Śiva; the explosion of Śiva, by fire [i.e. “Ra”], as fire. And "Īṃ", again is Mahā Gupta Saraswatī bīja. And Hrīṃ is so important that in creation, preservation, and in reabsorption it comes three times in this mantra of Devi [i.e. pañcadaśi] –

  • once in as the vāgbhava kūṭa – in the face,

  • once in the kāmarāja kūṭa – from the neck to the navel, and

  • third time, below the navel [i.e. śakti kūṭa].

Three Śaktis (Icchā, Jñāna, Kriyā - Aiṁ, Klīṁ, Sauḥ)

It comes as Icchā – the desire to become many, the desire to procreate. Jñāna – establishing the knowledge base necessary for creation. And Kriyā – actual manifestation. So I J K – Icchā, Jñāna  Kriyā.

So once as:

  • Iccha Śakti, She manifests as – Ka E Ī La Hrīṁ, and in the

  • Jñāna Śakti, She is – Ha Sa Ka Ha La Hrīṁ, and

  • Kriyā Śakti – Sa Ka La Hrīṁ.

And these are condensed into simple letters: Aiṁ  Klīṁ, Sauḥ.

  • Aiṁ is the desire to create.

  • Klīṁ is the knowledge to create.

  • Sauḥ is the actual creation.

So Śrīṃ, Hrīṁ, Aiṁ Klīṁ Sauḥ.
